What is reverse osmosis?

Reverse osmosis is one of those things you hear mentioned all the time, but you’re just not really sure what it is. Maybe you remember something about osmosis from science class… but you can’t quite remember all the details. Is that the same thing? Does not sound like it would be. In short, reverse osmosis is a process utilized in many water filtration systems to remove unwanted elements. Osmosis is familiar to most of us. Picture a soaking wet sponge. You place it next to a dry cloth and the water seems to escape the wet sponge and travel over to the rag. This is because water naturally flows from an area of high pressure to one of lower pressure.

Reverse osmosis does the opposite. Makes sense, doesn’t it? It does this by basically creating a pressure imbalance. The unwanted elements are forced by this pressure imbalance through a permeable membrane where they are, in a sense, captured. The clean water is then free to continue on through the system.

If you are like me, then you are worried about the quality of water that you get at your house and you are considering the pros and cons of the different purification technologies that are commercially available.

One of them is based on the principle of reverse osmosis (RO). The question is: Does reverse osmosis make water safe to drink? In this article, I will try to answer this question by presenting to you the two main disadvantages of reverse osmosis.

First, let me explain the principle of operation. In general terms, osmosis is the passage of molecules through the microscopic pores of a living or synthetic membrane. In normal osmosis, a difference in the concentration of molecules between one side of the membrane and the other causes the molecules on the more concentrated side to pass through the membrane, equalizing the concentration on both sides.

Now, reverse osmosis treatment units use a thin synthetic membrane with pores large enough to allow passage of water molecules, but too small for larger molecules. Pressure forces water molecules through the membrane, but leaves the larger molecules of contaminants behind.

The process is called reverse osmosis because, instead of equalizing the concentration of substances on both sides of the membrane, the pressure creates pure water on one side and a concentrate of pollutants (and minerals as we discuss below) on the other. The pure water is channelled to the RO output, while the rest containing the pollutants (and minerals) is channelled to a drain.

The big downside of RO is that, because their molecules are larger than the water molecules, natural occurring minerals like calcium, magnesium and potassium are stripped away from the RO output.

The disadvantages of reverse osmosis that I referred to at the top are directly related with the long term consumption of demineralized water.

First, because it contains more hydrogen, it is an acid with a pH below 7. In order to neutralize the acid nature of the water, our body will pull minerals from our teeth and bones. This will produce mineral deficiency which will upset the balance of our system, leading to undesirable effects.

Second, it has been scientifically proven that when body water become more acid than alkaline (pH above 7), our body tends to produce more free radicals, those atoms or groups of atoms which are unstable and damage organ cells, causing cancer.

An alternative purification technology which is recognized by the U.S. EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) as the best available technology for removing contaminants without demineralization, is multi stage activated carbon filtration.

There are other types of water filtration systems on the market, but none come close to filtering out the amount of particles, metals and other harmful ingredients out of the water in order to end up with clean drinking water. Reverse osmosis water filter systems use a fine membrane that filters out all particles except for tiny water molecules. This allows the system to catch even the smallest of matter, such as chemicals, minerals, metals, arsenic and fluoride. One downside of the system is that there is sometimes a need to filter chlorine before it goes through the system so that the fine membrane is not damaged.

These systems are usually hooked into under the sink systems or point of entry systems so that they are plumbed into the direct water supply to the house. This keeps them out of the way and allows for full flow of water through the pipes while still cleansing the water at a high level.
